When friends pull into your driveway for a visit, or people are driving down the street, what’s the first thing they notice about your home? It’s not your shutter color, landscaping, or roofing: it’s your siding. When siding is dirty and worn, it can greatly reduce your home’s curb appeal. That’s why it’s important to visual inspect your home on a regular basis, so you can make siding repairs before they become major issues. Take a walk around your home once in the spring and once in the fall, and try to spot some of these warning signs.
It Shows Its Age
Depending on what kind of siding you have, age can manifest in one of several ways. If you have vinyl siding, you may notice sunspots. If you have wooden siding, you’ll want to be on the lookout for signs of warping and rotting, especially on the seams and edges. Even composite siding may form cracks as it gets older.
Nails Are Sticking Out
Get up close and personal with your siding, especially in areas where boards have been attached with nails. Look for nail heads that have risen up above the siding, are showing signs of rust, or are missing completely. Raised or missing nail heads mean your siding has shifted in some way, while rusty nails mean there’s a risk of moisture damage, not to mention the potential for gross rust-colored streaks down your siding.
Boards Look Uneven
While you’re on the lookout for strange nail issues, take a moment to inspect the seams between boards. If the seams look uneven, it could indicate that the caulking used to seal the boards has shrunk, leaving your home open to moisture damage.
